Blogging for Fun and Profit

In March 2009, I sat in a room full of SXSW attendees listening to food bloggers discuss their love for food and how they have made their success. One of these bloggers was Salt Lake City local, Kalyn Denny of Kalyn’s Kitchen. Now admittedly, I don’t recall specific details to what they recommended. However, I do recall walking away thinking “I love food and if Kalyn can do it successfully in Salt Lake City, why can’t I?” That following June, Foodie SL,UT was launched.

What “Embracing Social Media” Should Mean for SLC Hoteliers

Embracing social media and developing relevant content and strategy is what every hotel should strive toward, but don’t take our word for it. According to Travel Weekly’s April 2010 article on Social Media, “Social media use among travelers continues to grow faster than the travel industry itself. Unique monthly visitors to social travel sites rose 34% between the first half of 2008, and the last half of 2009 to 15.9 million.”

When the Personal and Professional Collide on Social Networking Sites

Recently, I got an alert telling me someone had tagged me in a photo on Facebook. When I logged in, I was mortified to see a family friend had posted a photo of my family circa 1986. There I am in the middle, with way too much hair, glasses as big as my head, and white tennis shorts…with a brown belt.

How to Interact with Social Review Sites

This past Valentine's Day, Urbanspoon ran a contest to find the "most romantic restaurant" in cities across America. For the unfamiliar, Urbanspoon is a widely popular user review site and social network for foodies. Great idea, this could guide a lot of people to try new restaurants they may not be aware of. The problem is that many of the results across the nation are indeed not at all romantic.

The Noise Gets Ignored

Several years ago, while living in Las Vegas, I was standing outside and having a chat with my neighbor. Suddenly, something didn't sound right. We both stopped talking, and looked at each other with a concerned expression. We both knew something was wrong, but couldn't put a finger on it. It was unsettling, unfamiliar, and mysterious.

How to Use a Flip Video Camera for Business

If you’re looking for information online, you Google it. When you ask for a paper tissue, you request a Kleenex. When you photocopy something, you make a Xerox.

Just as those brands are practically synonymous with their product’s purpose, Cisco’s Flip has become a commonplace term for creating quick, inexpensive, high-definition video for the Web.

Social Media and Your Business

There is a huge trend moving right now that seems to have everything going towards local. Being more locally focused, being a bigger part of your local community, being a more integrated entity both in the online and offline social spheres. But how can that be accomplished and more importantly how can it be done without costing you gobs of your precious time?

Foursquare – How The Next Big Social Media Trend Can Help Your Business Succeed

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ve probably heard the word “Foursquare” floating around the interwebs. They just turned 1, and are pushing the 1 million user benchmark. They’ve been featured on major tech blogs, the New York Times and made quite a stir at SXSW. They are boasting the same kind of buzz that surrounded Twitter before Ashton Kutcher jumped on the bandwagon and turned it into a 140 character tabloid.
