Trans-Pacific Flight Strengthens Salt Lake City as Hub of World’s Largest Airline
Now it’s even easier to access the world from Salt Lake City.
The Salt Lake Chamber, Utah’s largest business association, applauds Delta Air Lines for adding non-stop service to Tokyo. When the flights begin in June 2009, our state will be directly connected to Asia five times each week.
Following the merger of Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines, today’s announcement further strengthens Salt Lake City as a hub for the world’s largest carrier. Delta employs between three and four thousand Utahns and its affiliate carrier, SkyWest, provides between two and three thousand jobs. All those jobs depend on the vitality of Delta Air Lines.
With a hub in Salt Lake City, Delta’s impact on the local economy is significant. A 2006 study on the impact of commercial aviation on the economy shows that nearly 20 percent of employment in Utah is affected by the industry as well as eleven percent of total personal earnings. The overall impact of commercial aviation on our state economy ranks third in the nation.
“The non-stop flight to Narita Tokyo is another example of Salt Lake City emerging as a world city,” said Lane Beattie, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber. “This is another benefit of life in Utah and we’re working diligently to secure more international flights in the near future.”
Delta’s hub in Salt Lake City is vital to our local economy and makes doing business in and from our state a convenient reality. Shortly after adding our first trans-Atlantic flight to Paris, we are excited for the debut of our new trans-Pacific flight to Tokyo Narita, Japan.
