Consumer Spending Expected to be Down for Mother’s Day

A new survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF) says Mother’s Day spending will be down this year, as high gas prices and an uncertain economy will make consumers scale back.

Last year, consumers spent $139.14 each on Mother’s Day. This year individual spending is expected to be $138.63. Total Mother’s Day spending is projected to top $15.8 billion.

The 2008 Mother’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey says the most popular gifts this year will be Dining out, electronics, jewelry, and flowers.
