Thousands of dollars in research and development funding for local small business firms and research institutions became available when grants from the Department of Defense (DoD) Program Solicitation for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and for the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) were released July 28th, 2008. These grants afford entrepreneurs and companies a prime avenue to work on projects and retain equity while achieving milestones that ready them for institutional funding.

The SBIR/STTR Assistance Program, located at the Miller Corporate Partnership Center in Sandy, Utah, is able to assist local firms and technology companies in matching their technology products to possible grants as well as assisting in the writing and submittal process.

“We are here to assist local entrepreneurs and businesses with this program, helping to improve the number and quality of proposals that are submitted in response to this and future solicitations,” said Dr. Suzanne Winters, Program Director, “The DoD has just released this solicitation, but there are many other federal agencies that will have their own release dates. It’s a matter of matching up the technology to the right grant and producing a quality proposal that addresses the agencies needs. The SBIR Assistance Center can help with that and the entire process.”

The recent releases are all Phase I SBIR/STTR grant solicitations. Phase I grants determine the feasibility as well as the scientific, technical, and commercial merit of ideas submitted. The SBIR or STTR program typically awards $70,000 to $100,000 over a period of six to nine months. Phase II awards are typically $500,000 to $750,000 over a period of 24 months. Phase II awards are given only to Phase I recipients.

The DoD will begin accepting solicitations on August 25, 2008 and will close the solicitations on September 24, 2008 at 6am EST.
