U Student One of a Few Participants Selected for National Accounting Board Program
Seven alum of the David Eccles School have been selected for the program over the last 5 years.
For Libby Biittner, a Masters of Accounting student at the David Eccles School ofBusiness, education will not end with graduation in May. Shortly after her degree is in hand shewill complete requirements to become a certified public accountant inpreparation for her departure to Norwalk Connecticut to join the FinancialAccounting Standards Board as a technical assistant.
"I am excited to havethis rare opportunity. It will be amazing to have a firsthand experienceof the standards setting process," said Biittner. "Especially since the accounting profession is under so muchscrutiny due to the current state of the economy."
Everyyear, FASB selects nine master's of accounting graduates from around the countryto participate in a post-graduate technical assistant program. Sponsored byboth the FASB and Governmental Accounting Standards Board, assistants serve aone-year term while becoming highly immersed in the accounting standardprocesses.
To beconsidered for the position Master's graduates have to be nominated by thefaculty at their school and are subject to a strict screening and interviewingprocess. From the nationwideselection process, six people are selected to participate.
Onceselected, technical assistants interface with senior technical accountants andperform research and prepare data in various areas such as stockcompensation. Their job is toassist senior members of FASB with the process of creating new accountingstandards or revising old standards.
Since2004, seven master's graduates from the School of Accounting at the DavidEccles School of Business have qualified to participate in the FASB technicalassistant program. Jason Arbuckle, Vice President inCorporate Accounting Policies for JP Morgan Chase, was selected for the FASBprogram after graduating from theUniversity of Utah in 2004.
According to Arbuckle, the assistant program jump started hiscareer, "I was able to participate in the application of technical accountingtheory and was able to network with many prominent accounting professionals."Arbuckle continued, "From the program, numerous opportunities were presented,including a position with Ernst & Young Advisory Services, where I began mycareer."
Other Alumni from the DavidEccles School of Business to be selected for the FASB Assistant Program includeNicole Parrish (2007), Steven Arveseth (2006), Joanne Bennett (2006), AaronCowan (2006), Ryan Bergstrom (2005) and Jason Arbuckle (2004).
