An estimated two billion additional people will populate the Earth in the next 20 years, most of them in developing or underdeveloped countries. Occurring across the board, from small remote communities to large urban areas, this growth will create unprecedented demands for basic human needs such as food, water, housing, and medical care and for basic infrastructure needs such as building materials, transportation, energy, telecommunications, waste disposal, and environmental cleanup. Hence, the role of internationally responsible engineers and scientists will be critical in fulfilling those demands at various scales, mostly in the developing world.

Dr. Bernard Amadei is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is the Founding President of Engineers Without Borders-USA and co-founder of the Engineers Without Borders-International network. The activities of EWB-USA range from the
construction of sustainable systems that developing communities can own and operate without external assistance, to empowering such communities by enhancing local, technical, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills.

Dr. Amadei spoke as part of the 2008/2009 Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series in partnership with American Express and Westminster College's Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series. The series are presented by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy.
