The Utah Minority Bar Association (UMBA) has named Richard D. Burbidge “2017 Distinguished Lawyer of the Year.”

The award is given annually to a member of the Utah State Bar who has demonstrated achievement or dedication to objectives consistent with the mission and purpose of UMBA.

The UMBA Board praised Burbidge and expressed appreciation for:

  • His tireless efforts to educate his peers of the danger of implicit bias;

  • His support, mentorship and guidance that embolden people of color to enter the legal profession;

  • His leadership that embodies and inspires recognition of the essential role that diversity plays in the legal profession;

  • His generous support of the Rocky Mountain Innocence Center and of the Center’s commitment to ensure that citizens, lay people and lawyers alike, understand and value the judicial system.
