Even though Mia Love lost to Jim Matheson on election night, there are still more than 43,000 provisional and vote-by-mail ballots left to be counted. That means she still has a chance to catch Matheson, right?

Wrong.

UtahPolicy.com reached out to West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder, who was in a similar situation during his primary battle with Mark Crockett for Salt Lake County Mayor. The outcome of that race was unknown for two weeks due to uncounted ballots. He says the math for Love just doesn't add up.

Here's his breakdown. He says Love would need to capture 63% of those votes left to be counted in order to win. Given that she's only at 44% in Salt Lake County, it's not gonna happen.

"My heart really goes out to Mia. I know how tough it is to lose a close race," he said. "But looking at the math on this one, she made the correct call to concede on election night. I'm so sad by the outcome, but so proud of my friend and fellow mayor for her valiant effort."

Uncounted SLCO votes: 43,699
Half in 4th District: 21,835
If Love won 50% of those: 10,917
Current Love vote deficit: 2,818
New Love votes needed to win: 13,735
% of remaining this is: 63%
Current Love % in SLCO: 44.30%

However, if 53% of the 50% do break for Mia, she would win. Is it possible that the mail in voters have a different demographic than the general populous? Perhaps.
