The Salt Lake Community College Foundation raised a record $320,000 for student scholarships at its sixth annual Gail Miller Utah Leadership Cup on Monday, September 10.

More than 200 golfers representing 53 teams participated in the event, making it the most popular Leadership Cup to date.

The event, which took place at the Hidden Valley Country Club in Sandy, was staffed by more than 100 volunteers and 50 students from SLCC including scholarship recipients and athletes. Golfers also enjoyed the company of local celebrities, including Utah Jazz commentator Ron Boone, 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship winner Kelsey Chugg or long-ball legend Mark Frampton, who can drive a golf ball 415 yards. Additionally, the event was attended by Utah Jazz owner Gail Miller, trustee emeritus for the SLCC Board of Trustees.

Sponsors for this year’s golf tournament included the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation, JP Morgan Chase, Pepsi, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Mountain America Credit Union, Sinclair/Grand America and Zions Bank.

Current Trustees chair and senior vice president of Sinclair Oil Corporation Clint Ensign is a perennial participant in the tournament, usually along with several members of his family. “The thing I love about Salt Lake Community College is that it accepts everyone, and their open access policy is wonderful” he said after the tournament. “The staff and faculty are so committed to lifting the lives of these students, and many of them are first-generation students. These students out here have a ton of class, and they’re doing great things with their lives.”
